Cumulative voting is a voting system often used in HOAs, corporate boards, and some local elections to elect board members.
In cumulative voting, a voter gets multiple votes equal to the number of open board seats, and they can distribute those votes however they want.
Example (HOA Board Election)
Suppose:
There are 3 board seats open
You own 1 unit and get 3 votes
You can vote in different ways:
Option 1: Split votes
Candidate A = 1 vote
Candidate B = 1 vote
Candidate C = 1 vote
Option 2: Concentrate votes (cumulative)
Candidate A = 3 votes
OR
Candidate A = 2 votes, Candidate B = 1 vote
This helps minority groups or smaller groups of owners have a better chance to elect at least one preferred candidate.
